HELPING CONSUMERS NAVIGATE BUYING PROCESS

Gorgeous cars, fascinating technology and astonishing entertainment are just the beginning. Add to that new car companies, new programs, increased investment in displays and interactive activations plus nearly 1,000 new cars and trucks, the 2019 New York International Automobile Show (NYIAS) is shaping up to be one of the most exciting automotive events ever.

“It’s not just a car show, it’s an experiential event that has something for everyone,” said Auto Show chairman, John LaSorsa. Not since the beginning of the last century has the automobile industry experienced such rapid change, and as it launches new vehicles and lays out its technological advances for the world to see, NYIAS is providing a platform for the automakers to tell their stories to the world and educate consumers about the latest developments. The Show has proven time and again that when consumers put down their hard-earned money for a new car or truck, they want to be sure they are making the right choice. And they love doing it here: under one roof, at their own pace, without pressure to buy. “Once press and industry days have concluded, we’re expecting over one million consumers to come through the doors,” said show president, Mark Schienberg. “And most of them will be here to research and compare models before visiting dealerships. According to data from Foresight Research, they come to our Show see the latest vehicles, learn about new technology and make real decisions before making their next purchase,” Schienberg added.

I T ’S NOT JUST A CAR SHOW, I T ’S AN EXPER IENT I AL EVENT THAT HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE .

WHEN TRENDS COLLIDE: ELECTRIC MEETS UTILITY

It’s a landmark time to be shopping for a new vehicle—maybe the most exciting time ever in the more than 100-year history of the automobile. Why? Because the automotive market is changing, quickly and massively!

Utility vehicles of all shapes and sizes have already taken over the market, now accounting for more than half of all the new vehicles sold in the US. And their popularity just keeps on growing, with already strong sales increasing almost 12% in 2018 in a relatively stable market. At the same time, electric vehicles are beginning to make serious inroads into the established order. While they still account for fewer than 1.4% of all new vehicles sold, their annual sales more than doubled in 2018

and they continue to climb as more new models arrive on the scene from manufacturers all around the world. An Edison Foundation report based on five independent forecasts projects that EVs will account for 30% of all new vehicle sales by 2030, if not before. Given those two clear trends, it was inevitable that they would intersect, and they do just that at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

MERCEDES-BENZ EQC

Making its North American auto show debut is the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the first fully-electric vehicle from the company that pioneered the automobile. And yes, it is a utility vehicle. The EQC is similar in size to the existing gasoline-powered GLC crossover but it rides on a brand-new platform and features a look of its own. It is said to be the first in a full lineup of all-electric vehicles to be launched under the EQ brand. This new electric platform houses a modular, 384-cell, 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack beneath the floor and between the axles. With the ability to fast-charge from 10 to 80 percent in 40 minutes, it is said to offer a driving range in excess of 200 miles.

AUDI E-TRON Already on the scene is the Audi e-tron ( see right ); a luxurious, mid-size SUV that just happens to be designed from the ground up as an electric vehicle. The e-tron features an electric motor on each axle, with the rear slightly more powerful than the front, making a combined total of 402 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. Between the two, it is powered by a 95 kWh battery pack, with an estimated driving range of more than 200 miles between recharges. JAGUAR AND NEWCOMER RIVIAN Also on the market is the Jaguar I-Pace, providing svelte confirmation of the concept that EVs can be beautiful. Looking a little further into the future, check out the all-electric Rivian SUV at the Show, displayed along with the Rivian ( see above ) pickup truck prototype. Rivian is a new, Michigan-based American automaker expected to begin production in 2020, starting with the pickup, then the SUV.

Whether your interest is electric, utility, or both, you’ll find something to satisfy it at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

TECHNOLOGY TREASURES TO EXPLORE AT THE AUTO SHOW THERE IS MORE TO NEW AUTO TECH THAN ELECTRIC AND AUTONOMOUS While most of today’s automotive headlines seem focused on the future of electric and autonomous vehicles, there’s plenty of tech that’s new and exciting in more conventional areas as well—from headlamps to tailgates and everywhere in between. And the New York International Auto Show is the place to find them. Here are some of the new features on your next new car:

HYUNDAI SANTA FE A key feature for city dwellers, the Hyundai Santa Fe’s Safe Exit Assist system locks the rear doors when it is stopped, if it detects an oncoming vehicle or a bicycle approaching in the adjacent lane. The locks release once the vehicle passes. Jaguar’s i-Pace offers a similar system that sounds a warning rather than locking the doors. FORD F-SERIES Blind Spot Information Systems, including some with cross-traffic alert warn of vehicles approaching from either side, are now available on multiple models. Ford has upped the ante on that technology by making it functional on certain F-Series pickups, even when towing trailers up to 8.5 feet wide and 33 feet long.

Ford F-Series

DRI VER FOCUS DMS

SUBARU FORESTER Distracted driving has been identified as a major cause of vehicle crashes, so some luxury brands now offer driver-monitoring devices to provide a warning if the driver’s attention wanders. So, too, does the more mainstream Subaru Forester with its DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System (DMS). It uses a combination of conventional and near-infrared interior cameras to monitor the driver’s face and identify signs of drowsiness or distraction, based on eye movement.

HYUNDAI DIGITAL KEY Hyundai’s next generation 2020 Sonata, which makes its debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show, has a ‘Digital Key’, which allows users to unlock and start their Hyundai vehicle via their smartphones. Replacing a traditional physical key, this new Digital Key can be downloaded via an app and used by up to four authorized people.

MERCEDES-BENZ MBUX SYSTEM Mercedes-Benz’s new MBUX infotainment system brings cutting-edge communications tech and AI learning capabilities to a new level for vehicles. It includes haptic touchpad controls, wide-screen augmented reality video graphics and plain-language voice controls initiated by simply saying, “ Hey, Mercedes !”

RAM 1500 One of the latest areas of technical one-upmanship has become the humble pickup-truck box and tailgate. Ram 1500 pickups now offer lockable storage boxes within the rear fenders plus a tailgate that swings not just down, as one piece, but sideways, with a 60/40 split.

GMC SIERRA The GMC Sierra’s available MultiPro tailgate goes even farther. Literally a tailgate within a tailgate, it offers up to six separate configurations, including a fold-down step and a torso-height work surface, as well a load- stop for extended-length loads and Bluetooth speakers available within the tailgate. If that’s not over-the-top enough, you can always opt for a genuine carbon-fiber pickup box. Headlamp to tailgate, there are pioneering technologies everywhere you look at the Auto Show.

INNOVATIVE NEW DISPLAYS, EXCITING ENGAGEMENTS AND THRILLING RIDES FOR VISITORS Investment in displays and interactive experiences continue to increase as OEMs enhance the experience for attendees researching their next new car or truck. THRI LL RIDES

New York’s favorite outdoor test track is back. Camp Jeep gives riders the opportunity to experience the rugged capabilities of many Jeep vehicles, including the all-new Gladiator. The track includes an 18-foot-tall “Jeep Mountain” that’s sure to get hearts pounding. The Toyota Thrill Ride will feature 2019 RAV4 gas and Hybrid models navigating an outdoor test track that tests 0-25 acceleration, ABS braking, and an ice crossing. The ride also features a rock crawl, side tilt and slalom.
