IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL… TIPS TO REDUCE HOLIDAY PARTY LIABILITY
If you’re planning to host a holiday party for your employees this year, make sure the event is not only fun, but also safe. Too much merriment can open you up to liability - even if the party takes place at an offsite venue. Two employees found this out the hard way, after holiday party pictures of them getting intimate made their way around the company! To avoid this, the Association suggests the following holiday party protocol: Alcohol: If you serve alcohol, remove the opportunity to drink to excess by serving drinks during a limited time and offering only beer and/or wine. Attendance: Party attendance should be voluntary, with no penalty for absence. Conduct: Workplace policies should remain in effect during the party. Remind employees that the dealership’s anti-harassment and anti-discrimination rules apply during social events on or off site.
Insurance: Make sure you have the necessary insurance coverage: • When choosing a location, ensure it meets safety standards;
• Based on the venue, determine if your Workers’Comp policy will be in effect; • Review your general liability and employment practice liability policies. Religion: Do not associate the party with a specific religion (i.e., refer to the event as a “holiday party”).
