New DMV Airbag Requirement In February, the New DMV Airbag Requirement went into effect, prohibiting dealers from selling used cars without first inspecting the onboard airbag notification indicator light and verifying that such an inspection has been done on the sales invoice/ bill of sale. Dealers selling used cars must: • Make sure the vehicle has airbags. • Check the readiness indicator light to ensure it does not show a malfunction. • Include the new statement below, in no less than 10-point type, on Bills of Sale or Invoices. The following statement, provided by DMV, must be placed immediately below the Used Car Certification: “The dealer named above further certifies that this vehicle complies with the inflatable restraint system requirements found in section 419-a of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.” NYVIP3 Update DMV will be rolling out the new NYVIP3 emissions inspection system late in 2022.
