NYSERDA DRIVE CLEAN REBATE PROGRAM
Earlier this year there was a chance the rebate fund could run out of money. GNYADA advocated for ongoing funding for point-of-sale rebates and after a series of calls and exchanges with the NewYork State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) regarding the status of these funds, the Governor’s office announced it was putting more money into the Drive Clean Rebate Program. Governor Andrew Cuomo officially announced New York will increase, by $30 million, the state’s Drive Clean Rebate Program. The fund helps offset the cost of new Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) purchases and leases. The Rebate Program, launched in March of 2017, as part of GNYADA’s efforts for New York State to put “money on the hood” by creating an incentive for consumers who would consider buying an EV. The Fund started with $55 million and has been considered a great success. To date, the program has provided over $54 million in rebates for the sale of 37,000 EVs. More than 63% of those rebates have been for EV sales in the Greater New York region. The new funding boost comes after concerns that the fund was soon going to run out of money. GNYADA communicated its concerns to NYSERDA officials, requesting action be taken before the fund was completely depleted. GNYADA strongly supports the Governor’s Drive Clean Fund along with the Federal rebate program to make ZEVs more affordable for New Yorkers.
